Sculpture + Lighting: How to Light Your Art Like a Gallery

The three lighting moves that turn a sculpture into a gallery moment — with placement angles that flatter any material.

Light Is Half the Sculpture

Sculpture is made to be seen from an angle, and light creates the angle. The difference between "a figure on a table" and "a gallery moment" is usually three decisions: direction, angle, and colour temperature.

Decision 1: Direction

  • Downlight from above at 30 degrees: sculpts shadows and reveals form — the gallery default
  • Uplight from below: dramatic, theatrical — use sparingly for statement pieces
  • Side light at eye level: warm and intimate — great for shelves and consoles
  • Decision 2: Angle and Distance

Aim for a 30-45 degree light-to-object angle, with the light two to three times the piece's height away. This avoids the harsh "interrogation" look of straight overhead light.

    Decision 3: Colour Temperature

  • 2700-3000K (warm): flatters bronze, brass, and wood tones
  • 3000-3500K (neutral): safest for white marble and onyx — keeps them bright without going clinical
  • Avoid cool 4000K+ on warm materials; it washes out patina
  • Try It Before You Buy

Our product pages include a scene preview showing each piece in a realistic interior — useful for imagining how it will catch your own light. For the full experience, start with a single well-placed sculpture and light it like this guide.
